As with learning any new skill, its all about speaking the language. New concepts and terms for a new set of skills.
It's important that we speak the same language, so here are a few definitions and concepts that are useful for a discussion on web editing using a CMS such as Joomla.
What is editable content?
Content is the stuff that your customers have come to see - its the text and images that you arrange on a page, and which is not part of the standard template structure.
Most content items are called "articles", but there are also other places that content can appear.
Content can also appear in modules eg. in a RSS feed, Latest News box etc.
Sometimes a page may have content displayed that is a Category or Section description. (Go to Content > Category Manager, and click on an item. Notice that there is a text area to enter a description of the category).
Whether this description is displayed or not depends on the parameters that are set in the menu link that leads to that page, and whether a description is entered for that category or section.
Menu links contain many options (or parameters) that can influence how the page is displayed. Often a menu link will be set to display a (layout style) of "Blog Category". And one of the parameters for the link may be to display the description for the category.

Sections contain categories. Categories contain Articles.
Sometimes a 3rd party component (eg a shopping cart) may introduce a different system of categories. These new categories do not (usually) relate to your article content.
menu items are not categories, but they can open a page that summarises a category if they are configured to do so.
